Fall of 2001 marked the harvest of the first test plot of compositionally enhanced soybeans from the United Soybean Board's (USB) Better Bean Initiative. The development of a variety with lower saturated fat/low linolenic acid is USB's first step toward providing a number of value-added soybean varieties to the food and feed industries. However, it is vitally important to be able to detect the presence of an enhanced trait at all stages in the continuum from breeder to consumer.
In order to sustain USB's mission for a Better Bean, the AOCS (American Oil Chemists' Society) is introducing the AOCS-USB Soybean Quality Traits Analytical Standards Program (SQT), a system of verification in analytical measurements. This program will provide the infrastructure for the generation of reliable analytical results at all levels of the soybean industry by establishing industry-wide acceptance of analytical methods and protocols and their implementation under internationally accepted quality management standards.
SQT's objective is clear: to achieve and maintain peak performance of laboratory staff and equipment.

Seed companies, referee & private laboratories, end–user laboratories, as well as elevator &
crop handling facilities can all benefit from participating in SQT. Those enrolled in the SQT
program will not only gain an advantage over competitors by ensuring that laboratory staff &
equipment evaluating compositionally enhanced soybeans are operating at an optimal level but will also have access to the “Members Only” areas of the SQT website which will include scholarly
articles & presentations as well as free AOCS methods.
As part of your membership you will receive the following:
- Quarterly evaluation
- Free AOCS methods for Crude Protein, Moisture, Oil, & Free Fatty Acids
- Access to Member’s Only areas of the SQT website
- Discounted AOCS membership
Future plans include the implementation of the Soybean Quality Traits Analytical Excellence
Award.
